SLC studies prove the enormous regional economic impact of top-class sport for the city and region of Regensburg

Regensburg is home to three clubs that play in the top three national leagues in their respective sports. The SLC report now proves in black and white that these clubs are not only an important soft location factor, but also an economic factor. SSV Jahn Regensburg (third division soccer), Eisbären Regensburg (second division ice hockey), and Guggenberger Legionäre (first division baseball) generate a regional economic effect for the city of Regensburg and the surrounding area amounting to €69 million per season. The largest share, €45 million, goes to the soccer players of SSV Jahn, €15.5 million to the Eisbären, and more than €8 million to the Guggenberger Legionäre.

On September 29, 2025, the report on the three professional clubs in Regensburg was presented at a press conference with Prof. Dr. Georg Barfuß (Head of the Department of Economics, Science, and Finance, City of Regensburg), Christian Volkmer (main shareholder, EVR Eisbären GmbH & Co. KG), Armin Zimmermann (CEO, Legionäre Baseball AG), Philipp Hausner (commercial director, SSV Jahn Regensburg GmbH & Co. KGaA), Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer (mayor, City of Regensburg), Jens Jaschinski (Director Consultancy, SLC Management) and Maximilian Madeja (Managing Director, SLC Management) (in the photo, from left to right, source: Gschlößl / SSV Jahn) in Regensburg.

The survey was conducted using both secondary research and extensive primary research in the form of surveys of fans of the three clubs, visiting fans of other clubs, and a representative sample of the population with a total of over 10,000 respondents. The study examined the following effects: employment, gastronomy, hospitality, turnover, investments, CSR structure, taxes, awareness, and image. The city benefits particularly from the club in the areas of gastronomy, turnover, and awareness and image.

Philipp Hausner, Commercial Director, SSV Jahn Regensburg GmbH & Co. KGaA: "The results of the study confirm and quantify the social impact and economic relevance of Regensburg's three top sports teams. Due to the holistic study design, the focus goes far beyond purely sporting aspects and delves into considerable depth in terms of content. At the same time, the conservative valuation approach of the experts at SLC Management provides a particularly sound and reliable reference for further discussion."

Armin Zimmermann, CEO, Legionäre Baseball AG: "Top-level sport also has a significant economic component. The study shows how important the three flagship team sports are as image carriers and as an economic factor for the city. It proves that investments in top-level sport literally pay off. For the Guggenberger Legionäre, the results of the study are confirmation of their work. Above all, however, they are encouragement and motivation. We want to become even better and offer even greater added value. For the sport and for the city."

Christian Volkmer, Principal Shareholder, EVR Eisbären GmbH & Co. KG: “Top-class sport is an important driver for the image and economic strength of our city. The results of the study impressively demonstrate the role played by Regensburg's major team sports clubs. For us at Eisbären, this is an important confirmation and, at the same time, motivation to continue on our path – with the aim of achieving even more for our city and our region in the future, both in sporting and economic terms and for society.”

Prof. Dr. Alfons Madeja, Scientific Director, SLC Management: "This study details the social and economic significance of SSV Jahn Regensburg, Eisbären Regensburg, and Guggenberger Legionäre for the city of Regensburg. The calculated value clearly shows the importance of Regensburg's team sports clubs, not only in popular sports but also in professional sports. In particular, the enormous image impact for the city, but also the direct effects on employment, income, and sales are particularly noteworthy given their magnitude. The report has succeeded in clearly quantifying the importance that was often assumed but never really tangible. It thus transparently illustrates in figures how the city of Regensburg benefits from its three flagship team sports clubs, both in terms of its external image and through regional value creation."
