"How soccer fans pay" - Stadionwelt publishes exclusive survey by SLC on payment in the stadium
With technological progress, cashless payment has increased significantly. A survey by SLC Management, published in the trade magazine Stadionwelt, shows that more and more soccer fans prefer digital payment methods. While 47.5% of fans still preferred cash in 2020, this figure had fallen to just 38.3% by 2024. Debit cards are now the most popular means of payment for daily purchases. In particular, payments made by smartphone or smartwatch have become more popular and are viewed more positively by fans than four years ago.
“The data shows a significant increase in the acceptance of digital payment methods,” explains Maximilian Madeja, Managing Director of SLC Management. The survey makes it clear that mobile payments also score better than in 2020 in terms of security, hygiene, convenience and speed.
The study also shows age-specific differences: younger fans more often prefer cash in their everyday lives, but opt for debit cards in the stadium. Older fans, on the other hand, use their debit cards more often in their everyday lives, but prefer cash in the stadium. Almost a quarter of those under 25 years of age would also like to have the option of paying by smartphone in the stadium.
Overall, fan satisfaction with the payment options offered in Bundesliga stadiums has improved. Openness to digital payment methods has increased, although the technical implementation has slightly deteriorated. However, the personal implementation by the vendors is rated slightly better than in the 2020 survey.
“Although the overall view of the results provides an important orientation for assessing the general situation, it is advisable to take an individual approach for your own club. Depending on the region, stadium and club, the perspectives of the local target groups naturally differ,” explains Maximilian Madeja, managing director of SLC Management.
