SLC study shows record value: FC Bayern Munich generates €4.5 billion annually for city and state
FC Bayern Munich celebrated its 125th anniversary this year. As a football club, it is the most successful club in Germany and one of the most successful and largest clubs in the world. In the 125 years of its existence, it has developed into one of the biggest sports brands in the world and has repeatedly set new standards over the years. Most recently with a record turnover of over 1 billion euros. However, the economic and social impact the club has on a city is often difficult to grasp.
It is obvious that FC Bayern Munich is of great importance to the city of Munich and beyond that to the Free State of Bavaria. However, this significance has not yet been quantified and monetised. The study now published by SLC Management has succeeded in doing so for the first time. This quantification impressively demonstrates the perceived importance of the club for its home region based on various criteria. The data also reflects the fact that FC Bayern Munich is a Bavarian brand that operates and has a global presence. The club's influence is therefore not limited to the region or the country, but has a global impact.
In total, FC Bayern Munich generated regional economic effects for the city of Munich and the Free State of Bavaria totalling around €4.5 billion per season with Bundesliga and Champions League participation. This result is made up of various factors. The largest part is the publicity and advertising effect. Among other things, this measures the national and international visibility that the association creates for the city and the Free State of Bavaria. Other factors include effects on the hotel and catering industry, the employment effect and the turnover effect from contracts awarded to regional companies.
The study involved both secondary research and comprehensive primary research. A representative sample of fans of FC Bayern Munich ("home fans"), the other Bundesliga clubs ("visiting fans") and a sample representative of the population were surveyed.
Jan-Christian Dreesen, Chairman of the Executive Board of FC Bayern München AG:
"FC Bayern is much more than just a football club - it is a piece of home, a figurehead for Munich and Bavaria. Now we can also demonstrate the economic added value we create for the city and the Free State of Bavaria year after year. These figures prove it: Our appeal extends far beyond sport - it creates jobs, added value and global visibility. Mia san Mia doesn't just mean success on the pitch, but also creating value for the community."
Prof. Dr Alfons Madeja, Managing Director of SLC Management GmbH:
"The economic dimension of professional football in Germany cannot be reduced to high match salaries. The social benefits, especially for the respective city and region, can be proven with some impressive figures. Of course, this is particularly true for FC Bayern Munich as the industry leader."
About the regional economic study by SLC Management
Sport in Germany has an extraordinary social and economic significance, which is also reflected in the importance of the respective sporting event/club for the organising region.
This impact of sports clubs and events on the society, economy, culture and politics of a country is also reflected in the respective cities and regions of the clubs: this has clearly describable effects, some of which can be evaluated both quantitatively and qualitatively. To improve mutual understanding between the city/region and the club/organiser, an analysis of the regional economic effects is recommended, which provides a transparent and neutral picture of the club's performance for the city.
