SLC study shows: SG Dynamo Dresden generates 86 million euros annually for the city and region of Dresden
It has long been proven that a top-class football club is an immense economic factor for the city and region. SG Dynamo Dresden now has this value in black and white. According to the latest study by SLC Management, the third division club has an annual regional economic impact of at least 86 million euros for the city and region of Dresden. If the Saxons succeed in being promoted to the second division, this figure will rise to over €120 million.
The effects are spread across the various sectors of the economy. These include the approximately 1,250 jobs created directly and indirectly by the club. High effects are primarily achieved in the catering and hotel sectors: Consumption by home and visiting fans in and around the stadium and in the city area generates around €13 million a year. In addition, many visiting fans stay overnight in accommodation, which also generates a value of almost 6 million euros per year. Many of the visiting fans also visit the city again outside of football. In terms of revenue effects, the value amounts to around 18 million euros. The largest item in the regional economic study is the so-called advertising effects: Dynamo Dresden achieves an enormous media reach every year via TV, social media, print and online media. The club acts as an important ambassador for the city of Dresden, whose name is inextricably linked to the club. To achieve the same advertising effect, the state capital would have to invest around 35 million euros, according to the estimates of the SLC study.
The survey was based on both secondary research and extensive primary research in the form of interviews with Dynamo Dresden fans, visiting fans of other clubs and a sample representative of the population.
David Fischer, Managing Director Communications, SG Dynamo Dresden: "We are grateful that Prof Dr Madeja and his team from SLC Management, renowned experts, have taken on the implementation of the project and the determination of the regional economic effects of SGD. With their approach and experience, they have succeeded in identifying and demonstrating the financial added value of SGD for the region.
The public sometimes gets the false impression that Dynamo is happy to hold out its hand when it comes to sports funding or the stadium subsidy, for example, without providing anything in return. The study we commissioned shows that this is not the case with remarkable figures. [...]"
Prof. Dr Alfons Madeja, Scientific Director, SLC Management: "The question of what effect a football club has on a city or region in economic and social terms is often difficult to grasp. Most people are aware of this and have the feeling that the effect, especially in the case of SG Dynamo Dresden, will not be very small. However, a quantification and thus an underpinning of the feeling with data and facts has not yet taken place.
With this study, we have succeeded in making the value that SG Dynamo Dresden brings to the city and region measurable and providing a concrete answer to the special significance the club has for the city and the region. [...] Dynamo Dresden in particular is a good example of how the enormous economic and social significance and the effects that a club has for a city are not solely dependent on its league affiliation. The club has a greater financial significance for the city of Dresden than many clubs playing in the higher leagues have for their respective locations."
About the regional economic study by SLC Management
Sport in Germany has an extraordinary social and economic significance, which is also reflected in the importance of the respective sporting event/club for the organising region.
This impact of sports clubs and events on the society, economy, culture and politics of a country is also reflected in the respective cities and regions of the clubs: with clearly describable effects, some of which can be evaluated both quantitatively and qualitatively. To improve mutual understanding between the city/region and the club/organiser, an analysis of the regional economic effects is recommended, which provides a transparent and neutral picture of the club's performance for the city.
