SLC report sheds light on the regional economic effects of 1. FC Magdeburg: The club generates 82 million euros for the city and region
"Brand ambassador for Magdeburg" and "added value proven by clear facts" - SLC Management's expert opinion shows: 1. FC Magdeburg generates regional economic effects totalling 82 million euros for the city and region.

On 19 February 2025, the expert opinion for 1. FC Magdeburg and SC Magdeburg [detailed announcement follows] was presented at a press conference with Jens Jaschinski (Director Consultancy, SLC Management), Martin Geisthardt (Managing Director, 1. FC Magdeburg), Dr Jörg Biastoch (President, 1. FC Magdeburg) and Marc-Henrik Schmedt (Managing Director, SC Magdeburg) in Magdeburg presented (in the photo from left to right).
So 1. FC Magdeburg is not just a club on the pitch, but also an attractive employer, tenant, client for regional companies, retailer, advertising and sponsorship platform and, last but not least, a responsible organisation for social tasks. The city particularly benefits from the club in terms of awareness & image, employment and turnover.
The regional economic study was based on the 2024/2025 second division season. As part of the study, fans of 1. FC Magdeburg, sympathisers of other clubs (visiting fans) and a representative sample of the population were surveyed in a regional and Germany-wide study. The following effects were analysed as part of the study: Employment, catering, hotel industry, turnover, investments, CSR structure, tax, awareness & image.
Martin Geisthardt, Commercial Managing Director, 1. FC Magdeburg: "What concrete economic impact does 1. FC Magdeburg have on the city and the region? In order to provide a fact-based answer to this question, we conducted a comprehensive value creation analysis together with the renowned consultancy firm SLC Management. This analysis shows in detail the economic effects generated by our club - from direct and indirect employment effects to added value for the catering, hotel and retail sectors and tax revenue for the public sector. At the same time, the social benefits of 1. FC Magdeburg are also quantified, be it in the promotion of young talent, in social projects or in the strengthening of regional identity.
The results of the analysis impressively demonstrate that 1. FC Magdeburg is a mainstay for Magdeburg and Saxony-Anhalt not only in terms of sport, but also economically. The club's appeal gives the city immense visibility beyond the state's borders and makes a decisive contribution to the economic stability and development of the region."
Simone Borris, Mayor of the City of Magdeburg: "It is important for the clubs to be able to show what significance they have for the city of Magdeburg. [...] The figures themselves and also this breakdown from the survey, which once again makes it clear that the people who come to Magdeburg to watch matches also stay here and, above all, come back and also the proportion of the image gain for the city, that surprised me to a certain extent. But that also clearly shows me that the sports campus in Magdeburg really is important and should remain here - with the necessary development that we naturally have to implement. That is the task facing the city."
Prof. Dr Alfons Madeja, Scientific Director SLC Management: "This study provides a clear answer to the question of what effect a football club, in this case 1. FC Magdeburg, has on a city in economic and social terms. This value of the club, which is not easy to grasp and is therefore often estimated from the gut, was made measurable and thus tangible here in figures. The data collected clearly shows how valuable 1. FC Magdeburg is for the city/region and the people in the city/region, as well as its economic and social importance. The traditional club with its long and often successful history is a beacon for the Magdeburg region. Not only in the sense that it acts as an ambassador for the city and significantly shapes its image, but it also represents a significant economic factor for the city and the region. The good sporting development of recent years therefore also goes hand in hand with the good economic development from which, as shown here, the city and the region also benefit."
