SLC report reveals: SSV Ulm 1846 football generates effects totalling 66 million euros for the city and region
"A strong signal for sport" and an "economic factor with potential" - The report by SLC Management shows: SSV Ulm 1846 football generates regional economic effects totalling 66 million euros for the city and region. After two successive promotions, this figure would increase significantly if the club were to establish itself in the Bundesliga 2 in the long term and if the stadium were to be expanded or the infrastructure modernised.
On 15 January 2025, the report was presented in a press conference with Jens Jaschinski (Director Consultancy, SLC Management), Markus Thiele (Managing Director, SSV Ulm 1846 Football) and Max Rieck (Press Spokesman, SSV Ulm 1846 Football) in Ulm (in the photo from left to right).
SSV Ulm 1846 football is therefore not only played on the pitch, but also as an attractive employer, tenant, client for regional companies, retailer, advertising and sponsorship platform and, last but not least, as a responsible organisation for social tasks. The city particularly benefits from the club in terms of awareness & image, catering and turnover.
The regional economic study was based on the 2024/2025 second division season. As part of the study, fans of SSV Ulm 1846 football as well as sympathisers of other clubs (guest fans) were surveyed in a regional and Germany-wide study. The following effects were analysed as part of the study: Employment, catering, hotel industry, turnover, investments, CSR structure, tax, awareness & image.
Markus Thiele, Managing Director & Board Member, SSV Ulm 1846 Football: "We decided to commission such a study in order to demonstrate the importance of the club as a beacon for the city of Ulm and the region and to make it tangible. We are delighted that we were able to recruit Prof Madeja and his team from SLC Management, renowned experts who have already carried out numerous studies of this kind, for this project. As a club, we have long been aware that SSV Ulm 1846 football is of great importance to Ulm and the people in the region. However, it has not been possible for us to prove or realise this until now. Thanks to this report, we have now been able to assess and quantify this significance in monetary terms.
This study on the regional economic effects of our club is of particular importance to us, as it shows the role that SSV Ulm 1846 Football plays in the economic, cultural and social development of the region. Together with the region, we want to continue to grow and set a strong example for sport and the community."
Prof. Dr Alfons Madeja, Scientific Director SLC Management: "The question of what effect a football club has on a city in economic and social terms is often difficult to grasp. In the case of SSV Ulm 1846 football, we can now use our study to provide a concrete answer to the considerable effects the club has on the city and region of Ulm. The data obtained clearly shows how valuable the club is for the region and the people in the region, as well as its economic and social importance. It also shows that the traditional club, which has enjoyed great success in the past, is also an economic factor with potential. The study makes it clear that the region also benefits from the club's ambitious goals of establishing itself in professional football."
