SLC studies reveal: More than 20 million euros in regional economic effects for the city of Duisburg from two major sporting events
"The studies are an incentive for us to bring further major events to Duisburg," says Uwe Kluge, Managing Director of Duisburg Kontor, about the studies by SLC Management on the regional economic effects of the two analyzed major sporting events for the city of Duisburg.
On behalf of Duisburg Kontor, Duisburg Sport and Duisburger Stadionmanagement GmbH (DSM), SLC Management examined the regional economic effects of the Canoe World Championships and the European League of Football final in Duisburg in 2023. These results have now been presented at a press conference.
The two studies show regional economic effects of more than 20 million euros for both major events - around 6.3 million euros for the Canoe World Championships on the regatta course last August and almost 14 million euros for the European League of Football final between Stuttgart Surge and Rhein Fire in September 2023 in the 31. 500 spectators in the sold-out Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena.
The answers to the questions "What do major sporting events bring to the city of Duisburg?" and "How strong are the economic and image-enhancing effects?" exceeded the expectations of the clients, according to their own statements. Hotels and restaurants in particular have benefited greatly from the major events. In addition, the city of Duisburg received a major advertising platform thanks to the national and international media presence of the events.
Sören Link, Lord Mayor of the City of Duisburg, on the ELF study: "I am very pleased that we were able to recruit renowned experts in Duisburg, Prof. Dr. Alfons Madeja and his team from SLC Management GmbH, to determine and quantify the regional economic effects that this event has on the city. The well-founded analyses and their results, based on extensive event-specific market research, research and data analysis, show that the ELF Final 2023 generated regional economic effects amounting to 14 million euros for the city of Duisburg."
Christopher Mainka, Managing Director of Duisburger Stadionmanagement GmbH, on the ELF study: "In order to find out how and to what extent the city of Duisburg benefits from such major sporting events, we commissioned SLC Management to investigate the regional economic effects of the football final. The result was a figure that exceeded our expectations. The effects clearly show that investments in sports facilities and events are more than worthwhile for the city and its inhabitants. For us, it is important that we have received a neutral and independent evaluation from a professional expert, which we can bring into the discussion about future, groundbreaking investment decisions."
Prof. Dr. Alfons Madeja, Managing Director of SLC Management: "The economic data obtained shows very clearly the economic and therefore social importance of such an event for the city of Duisburg and for the people in and around Duisburg."
