An economic factor with potential: The SLC study on the regional economic effects for Rot-Weiss Essen
"The club is a major economic factor for the city of Essen with potential for a further significant increase." - That was the quintessence of the SLC Management study on the regional economic effects for Rot-Weiss Essen (RWE).
On February 29, 2024, Prof. Dr. Alfons Madeja (Managing Director of SLC Management) and Marcus Uhlig (CEO of RWE) presented the impressive results of the study at a press conference in the stadium on Hafenstrasse. Thomas Kufen (Lord Mayor of Essen), Alexander Rang (Chief Sales Officer RWE) and Jens Jaschinski (Director Consultancy SLC Management) were also present.
The study revealed that Rot-Weiss Essen currently generates more than 48 million euros in regional economic effects for Essen and the region as a third division club. This figure would increase even further if the club were promoted to Bundesliga 2 and the stadium were expanded.
Rot-Weiss Essen is therefore not just a club on the pitch, but also an attractive employer, tenant, client for regional companies, retailers, advertising and sponsorship platform and, last but not least, a responsible corporate citizen. The city particularly benefits from the club in terms of awareness & image, gastronomy and turnover. The regional economic study was based on the 2022/2023 third division season. As part of the study, a total of 5,240 people, consisting of fans of Rot-Weiss Essen and supporters of other clubs (visiting fans), were surveyed in a regional and Germany-wide study. In addition to the monetarily measurable effects, the study also looked at the non-measurable effects, such as the area of corporate social responsibility.

Marcus Uhlig, CEO of Rot-Weiss Essen: "We wanted to know whether RWE's impact on the city (society) can be measured and, if so, to what extent.
We are delighted that we were able to recruit Prof. Dr. Madeja and his team from SLC Management, renowned experts, to determine the regional economic effects. The impressive results prove that RWE is a significant economic factor in and for the city of Essen. Looking to the future, we are convinced that our potential - both emotional and economic - is far from exhausted. On the contrary, we assume that a continuation of the positive development in both the sporting and infrastructural areas will result in a further increase in the economic effects for the city of Essen."
Thomas Kufen, Lord Mayor of Essen: "The study on the regional economic effects of Rot-Weiss Essen on the city of Essen impressively demonstrates the economic and therefore also social importance of Rot-Weiss Essen for the city of Essen and the people of Essen. This club has an emotional significance for the city. That is a good argument for continuing to invest."
Prof. Dr. Alfons Madeja, Scientific Director SLC Management: "Determining the regional economic effects that the Rot-Weiss Essen club has for the city of Essen shows very clearly that the club is a major economic factor that benefits the city and the surrounding area in many ways. And it is an economic factor with potential for a further significant increase in the regional economic effects it generates. Our supplementary projection of the expected increases in regional economic effects following a possible stadium expansion shows a considerable one-off and annual additional monetary effect for the city of Essen."
About the regional economic study by SLC Management:
Sport in Germany has an extraordinary societal, social and economic significance. Clubs in particular must not only do justice to this essential role, they should also obtain the relevant information about their actual impact. Only then can you create a verifiable social profile that shows your external stakeholders the real value of your club off the pitch.
With our reports on regional economic effects, we provide you with tailor-made analyses and solutions in the shortest possible time, which you can use both internally and externally.
The regional economic report is made up of individually calculated effects in detail:
- Employment effect
- Revenue effect
- Awareness and image effect
