Importance of sustainability - The views of Germany's four major sports leagues - Exclusive SLC survey on sustainability
Mittwoch, Juli 19, 2023
What do fans of the clubs in the four major sports leagues think about sustainability? What do they consider to be particularly important? What is the opinion on the sustainability strategy of the respective league?
SLC Management got to the bottom of these questions in its unique representative sports panels. The result is a major comparison of leagues in terms of sustainability, with publications in the trade magazine Stadionwelt.
With the help of online surveys in Germany's only representative sports panels with registered participants, a total of around 5,000 fans and customers of the German leagues were questioned for the surveys, which were published in Stadionwelt. The target group was fans of the German Football League (DFL), the LIQUI MOLY Handball Bundesliga (HBL), the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) and the Penny Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL).
Specifically, fans were asked about their general attitude to the issue of sustainability and whether the introduction of sustainability criteria in the licensing process was supported by respondents. With a clear majority of 75.6% in favor of introducing such criteria, the HBL's result was the highest among the top four leagues compared to the DEL's 71.8%, BBL's 71.4% and DFL's 68.4% of fans.
When asked what effect a club in the indoor leagues' involvement in sustainability campaigns has on fans and their behavior in matchday-related areas, it is notable that fans of the DEL are the least likely to change their behavior in any matchday-related area. In contrast, BBL supporters show the highest willingness to make their behavior more sustainable in relation to matchday-related aspects.
"The results of the study provide an indication of the fundamental attitude of fans. With all the results, however, it is worth looking at the details, as the values vary from club to club and depending on the region. There is already a fundamental willingness and sensitivity to the environment. Nevertheless, targeted communication and consideration of the needs of the stakeholders are still necessary in order to bring about an even more intensive change in behavior or a departure from the "comfort zone" in the medium and long term," says Maximilian Madeja, Managing Director of SLC Management GmbH.
