Sports facility construction - "Financing is not the problem": An article by the SLC managing directors published in Stadionwelt

An article about missing utilization and marketing strategies for sports facilities by Prof. Dr. Alfons Madeja and Maximilian Madeja, SLC Management GmbH, published in Stadionwelt. The experts from SLC explain: Why are feasibility studies necessary?

The construction of sports facilities is currently experiencing an enormous upswing, both in the area of new buildings and in the area of conversions. The problem of financing is very often raised in this context. This is mainly due to the fact that sports facilities are by nature - according to the opinion of many - unprofitable. However, the lack of investors and capital providers is not the product of unaffordable sports facilities, but of a lack of utilization and marketing strategies on the part of the operators. Consistent attention to a benefit/cost relationship is still not standard in the thinking of the industry and many potential sports facility initiators.

This raises the provocative question of the extent to which capital determines the dimension of a sports facility, or the extent to which a sports facility with attractive utilization and marketing possibilities demands a capital requirement needed for this purpose. Unfortunately, practice still shows all too often that architect's drafts with construction sums are put in front and then finally an economic use and marketing is looked for. A feasibility study is therefore absolutely necessary.

In the contribution of the two SLC managing directors Prof. Dr. Alfons Madeja and Maximilian Madeja, it will also be seen that a feasibility study for a sports facility project in this case is not understood to mean architectural or structural feasibility, but is primarily concerned with functional feasibility, based in particular on the possible service offerings, target groups and marketing opportunities. A feasibility study is basically intended to provide assurance in a project that the desired goals are feasible, attractive and also economical.
